OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – In the Class A/B Showdown final it looked like Westside boys basketball would pick up its first loss of the season. In the game’s final minutes, freshman guard Lee Robinson powered the Warriors to a fourth-quarter comeback win.
Down by eight going into the fourth quarter against Skutt Catholic, Westside turned to the hot hand of Robinson. The underclassman scored nine of his game-high 17 points in the last eight minutes, leading Westside to a 58-54 win.
“I think our team does a really good job of finding the hot hand and knowing who the hot hand is and feeding them the ball,” said Robinson. “I didn’t necessarily tell them to, but they just kept giving it to me and I just knew to keep going.”
“We put Lee in a bunch of high ball screens and he made a lot of really good reads,” said Westside boys basketball head coach Jim Simons. “For a freshman and being in that situation his basketball IQ is advanced and our guys trust him.”
Simons believed going up against a Skyhawks team that is physical and used to winnings was a good growth moment for his young point guard.
“Took him a couple of minutes to get going, but once he got going he got really comfortable in the game,” said Simons. “He adjusted to the physicality of the game and he used what he does well to impact the game.”
Only a month into his first season on varsity, Robinson is quickly adjusting to this next level of basketball and sharing the court with his new teammates.
“I’ve been playing up my whole life. I’ve been ready. So it feels normal. I mean, it’s a bigger crowd, louder. But I just come out and hoop,” said Robinson.
“I actually love being on this team. It’s better than I thought it would be. But I love my teammates and they’re all good, man.”
