Monday, December 16, 2024. A sequence of escalating incidents punctuated the week in Washington County, beginning Monday with a midnight car check on Highway 133 that resulted in the finding of a hidden firearm after deputies detected a marijuana odor.

That same morning, at 7:51 a.m., deputies aided a US Marshal task force with warrant serve in Herman.

The most dramatic occurrence on Monday came at 10:19 p.m. near Fort Calhoun, when Barry Fries (DOB 1/21/61) was apprehended after officers saw him attempting to unlock the door of an unoccupied car.

When halted, Fries refused to identify himself or roll down his window, resulting in a car breach and his extraction. He faces several counts, including failing to identify, obstruction, resisting arrest, driving while suspended, and registration offenses.

Carlos Gutierez-Pol (DOB 1/10/03) was taken into custody at the sheriff’s office when he arrived to pay a traffic ticket but was discovered to have an active Washington County warrant, and Wyatt Sumey (DOB 4/9/88) was arrested for DUI following a traffic stop at Highway 133 and County Road 35.

On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, a resident reported seeing 4-5 drones near Highway 133 and County Road 32 the night before, citing parallels to prior New Jersey instances. The Arlington Valley Fire Department responded to a field fire caused by downed power lines at County Road 9 and Highway 30.
