OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Huskers are on the loose in New York City during one of the most magical times of the year.
For many, it will be their first trip to NYC.
“I see how the people are. I just want to know like how it is as like a New Yorker. How their energy is. I know they be talking about ”bevs” and all that stuff and I just be finding it funny. So it will be cool be around and to go visit Central Park and all that stuff,” Jacory Barney Jr., freshman receiver, said.
“They have some good pizza out there. Go see the Rockefeller Tree…I think is what they call it…I’m sure it will be a crazy experience. Something that we’ve never been able to see so I think it will be fun,” Ben Scott, senior center, said.
“I’m just ready to go sight seeing and see as much stuff as I can see,” Marques Buford Jr., junior safety, said.
On Christmas morning, the Huskers held a walk-through at one of New York’s most iconic landmarks — Central Park.
“I don’t know if all of our guys know what Central Park is… I have to tell them it’s the park from ‘Home Alone 2,’ but some of our guys know it. Ceyair knows it,” Head Coach Matt Rhule said.
“Me personally, I’m extremely excited. New York has always been a place I wanted to go to. And spending the holiday season out there. You know like you always see the movies they be in New York for Christmas and stuff, so I’ve always wanted to do that, so it’s like a bucket list thing,” Ceyair Wright, junior cornerback, said.
Rhule is a New York City native, having spent a majority of his childhood in the city.
Six Nebraska players hail from the New York and surrounding areas, including Rahmir Johnson, a senior running back who grew up in Harlem.
“A lot of people haven’t been to New York City, so I guess they’re more excited about that. So they’re all like ‘Rahmir what’s the spots? Where we gonna go? What we gonna do?’ I tell them when we get out there I’ll take care of you, don’t worry about that,” Johnson said.
It’s not all sight seeing and city adventures for the Huskers. On Monday, they practiced at the Giant’s facility. On Tuesday and Thursday, the Big Red will practice at Fordham University.
On Friday, the Huskers will have a final walkthrough at Yankee Stadium before they battle Boston College on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Pinstripe Bowl.
