OFD crews, volunteer fire departments battle brush fire in northeast Omaha

On Monday afternoon, crews from the Omaha Fire Department and local volunteer fire departments battled a brush fire in northeast Omaha.

The fire started in a large, open field behind homes near 60th and Girard streets, near the proposed care facility for wounded veterans.

Battalion Chief Coby Werner told First Alert 6 that the fire was reported around 2 p.m., and that the Omaha Fire Department used local volunteer fire department crews to help fight the fire.

“We utilized our mutual aid partners, Irvington volunteer Fire and Ponca Hills volunteer Fire, for additional resources due to their geographical proximity and their brushfire capabilities,” Werner told me.

Werner said the fire was quickly extinguished after burning about five acres of grass.

There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
