WOWT in Omaha, Nebraska On Friday morning, a man lost his life in a collision in North Omaha.
Around 8 a.m., officers arrived at an intersection just northwest of Eppley Airfield. According to traffic investigators, a semi-truck trailer moving south on 16th Road was struck by a Toyota SUV that was traveling west on John J. Pershing Drive when it ran a stop sign.
Eloi Canals Morales, 25, the driver of the Toyota, passed very soon after being taken to the hospital. The semi-truck driver received a citation for DUI and having an invalid commercial driver’s license, but he was unharmed.
Authorities had to halt traffic in the region for about five hours as a result of the collision. Workers in the area told First Alert 6 that because the airport and numerous industrial buildings are so close to one another, the route is frequently congested.
Lt. Flynn stated, “A lot of semis come through here because some of the businesses back here are industrial businesses.”
The year has been awful for Omaha roads overall. This marks the city’s 58th deadly crash of 2024, which is by far a record high.
According to Lt. Flynn, “I don’t believe we’ve ever had anything above 45 before.”
This year, OPD has recorded 8,912 collisions involving hit-and-runs, property damage, or personal injury accidents. That figure excludes crashes for which no police record was submitted, as well as the month of December.
