MAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – An 18-year-old was detained following a street racing “meet-up” in Omaha on Sunday.
Gautam Gurung, 18, was detained and charged with flight to avoid arrest, obstruction, ignoring stop lights, breaching stop signs, abuse of a learner’s permit, and minor in possession of alcohol.
He is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.
According to a social media post from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Gurung attended a street racing “meet up” near 120th and Blondo streets before his arrest.
Sheriff Aaron Hanson has been ordering a crackdown on street racing in the metro for months. He claims it is a rising problem, with statistics indicating that 60 people perished in road crashes in Douglas County as of October 31.
He began impounding automobiles and seizing phones from suspected Omaha street racers in November.
“It might not be today or tomorrow…However, you will eventually be caught if you indulge in dangerous driving,” the Sheriff’s office stated in the statement. “You’ll go to jail. “Your car will be impounded.”
