Tuesday night’s game against Creighton is not just an opportunity for St. John’s to earn another Quad 1 win, but also to demonstrate that they are not the same old Johnnies and can win in unfriendly surroundings against strong opponents.
Creighton has dominated their series against St. John’s since joining the Big East in 2013, winning 16 of the 26 matchups. St. John’s performed considerably worse while traveling to Omaha, winning only one of 11 road games against Creighton at CHI Health Center.
The Red Storm’s only victory in Omaha came in the 2018-19 season, a shocking 83-67 blowout that coincided with the Red Storm’s last NCAA tournament appearance. St. John’s may have suffered the hardest in Omaha under Mike Anderson, who lost all four road games against Creighton by an average of 20.25 points.
When the new-look Red Storm arrived in town last January with Hall of Fame head coach Rick Pitino and jumped out to a 56-47 second-half lead, it appeared that the times were changing, but a late-game slide and an egregious no-call on Francisco Farabello’s late close-out attempt of a Jordan Dingle jumper at the final buzzer ruined a chance at a rare road win over Creighton.
