LINCOLN, Nebraska — Two individuals were detained in separate pursuits in western Nebraska on Tuesday, according to the patrol.

The first chase began on Sunday about 12:40 a.m., when troopers were alerted to a Toyota sedan going west on Highway 30 near Ogallala.

Officers from the Ogallala Police Department pursued the Toyota, and a trooper joined the chase as it exited Ogallala westbound, according to the patrol.

According to the patrol, the vehicle traveled west at speeds of more than 130 mph until it reached Big Springs.

Eventually, the driver of the Toyota, Christopher Mitchell, 26, of Sarasota, Florida, made his way onto eastbound Interstate 80.

Mitchell drove off the road and into a ditch, thereby ending the pursuit. He attempted to flee, but was swiftly arrested, according to the patrol.

Mitchell was arrested on suspicion of many offenses, including flight to avoid arrest and deliberate reckless driving.

The second pursuit occurred Monday about 2 p.m., when a trooper noticed a Ford Edge traveling at more than 100 mph on Highway 2 near Dunning.

The patrol said the trooper attempted to pull over the Ford, but the driver, 58-year-old Jeffrey Zitek of Grand Island, sped away.

Zitek ran over stop posts as he reached Thedford, causing the vehicle to come to a halt. He was arrested shortly afterward.

Zitek was detained on charges of willful reckless driving, fleeing to evade arrest, and traffic offenses.
