OMAHA – The people who are suspected of shooting and hurting a girl on New Year’s Eve went to court on Monday and gave more information about what happened.
21-year-old Tayzhia Hampton was charged with assault in the second degree. The bond for her was set at $100,000. Aaron Wallace, who is 20 years old, was charged with tampering with evidence and adding to a crime. A $20,000 bond was set for him.
The first hearing for both of them is on February 4.
A six-year-old girl was hurt in a shooting on New Year’s Eve, and the two were arrested on Friday.
Court papers that were filed Monday say that the victim found out she had been shot in the leg while watching TV in her bedroom.
Police said they found a spent shell casing in the backyard of a neighbor to the south of the victim’s house.
The police were told that Wallace stayed in the neighbor’s basement and might have had a gun.
Wallace said he did not have any guns in his house, but later he said he owned a rifle that was found in the basement. He said that on New Year’s Eve, he and his two sisters went outside to shoot the gun.
When the neighbor’s house was shot, the three of them ran back inside and saw on social media that police were on their way to the neighbor’s house because a 6-year-old had been shot.
Reports say they saw police search the neighborhood and later admitted they lied to police when they said Wallace and two other people were the only ones in the house at the time of the crime. They also admitted that they tried to hide the gun and pistol parts.
In the records, the bullet found in the wall matched the gun that was found.
Hampton reportedly fired the shot that hurt the girl. She told police that she “meant to hit the ground and accidentally shot the firearm upwards.”
She wrote the victim a letter to say she was sorry for what happened.
Wallace was arrested for being a part of a felony, and Tayzhia Hampton was arrested for second-degree assault and using a weapon to commit a felony.
A third suspect, a woman aged 21 years, was also given a ticket for firing a gun without permission.
