CHI Health has been sued by the family of an Omaha woman who died in jail after being arrested at the hospital

OMAHA, Nebraska – A trial began Tuesday in the case of a major Omaha metro hospital being sued for the death of a woman in 2022.

According to court documents, an ambulance transported 47-year-old Aundrea Milnes to CHI Health’s care facility near 24th and Cuming Street early on November 3, 2022.

Milnes, who complained of lower abdominal pain, was evaluated by both a nurse and a doctor. Milnes refused to leave after the doctor told her she had menstrual cramps.

According to court documents, Milnes refused to leave and reappeared about 25 minutes later at a different hospital entrance. Milnes’ family claims that at the time, Aundrea was in “severe and excruciating pain and was laying in front of the east entrance.”

According to court records, the hospital called the police, and officers arrested Milnes for trespassing and booked her into the Douglas County Corrections facility.

That same afternoon, November 3, 2022, Aundrea Milnes died in jail.

According to Milnes’ family attorney, she died as a result of complications from an abdominal and intestinal condition.

A grand jury determined about a year after Milnes’ death that there was no evidence of wrongdoing by law enforcement, and court documents state that the doctor, nurse, and hospital as a whole deny any wrongdoing, claiming they met the standard of care.

They also deny the nature and severity of her alleged injuries.

The jury trial is expected to last approximately a week. Stay tuned to First Alert 6 for the most recent developments.
