New Bern, NC – A winter weather advisory is in effect for eastern North Carolina, including New Bern and the Outer Banks, until 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Slick roads, black ice, and light freezing rain or drizzle are expected to create hazardous travel conditions overnight and early in the morning.
According to the National Weather Service, areas such as Dare, Beaufort, and Onslow counties may see a light glaze of ice after midnight as freezing rain falls.
Lingering snowpack and subfreezing temperatures will exacerbate road conditions, making sidewalks, bridges, and highways dangerously slippery.
Commuters are advised to drive cautiously and allow extra travel time. The risk of black ice is particularly high during tonight’s and Thursday morning commutes. Pedestrians should also exercise caution on icy surfaces to avoid slipping or falling.
Residents can get up-to-date road conditions by visiting DriveNC.gov. Temperatures are expected to rise later in the day Thursday, providing some relief from icy conditions. Until then, drivers and pedestrians should stay alert and prioritize safety while traveling.
