An Indiana man is in prison after shooting his estranged wife, who was 5 months pregnant, in the back, seriously injuring her and killing the child, authorities said.
Around 6 p.m. on Sunday, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a shooting in the 700 block of East Pleasant Run Parkway.
Officers arrived to find the victim, 25-year-old Kayla Netherland, in the bathroom with gunshot wounds. Paramedics rushed her to the hospital. Doctors were able to stabilize her but were unable to save the child.
According to a probable cause arrest affidavit obtained by Law&Crime, around the time of the shooting, one of Netherland’s friends arrived at the house to do laundry and entered. She reported seeing Netherland’s estranged husband, 36-year-old Jeremy McBride, standing over her body.
Cops say McBride looked at his friend and walked out the front door without saying anything. The friend told police that she believed McBride was responsible for Netherland’s death. Using license plate readers, officers located McBride and pulled him over.
McBride got out of the car, which rolled away because it wasn’t in park and collided with a pole, authorities said. He allegedly told the officer, “I was going to turn myself into the police station,” and stated that the gun in question was in his car.
He then allegedly said, “Is she okay?” The gun and handwritten notes to his estranged wife about their relationship were allegedly discovered in the car by police.
“McBride wrote to [Netherland] of his frustrations with her infidelity, his frustrations with their failed relationship, his anger & insecurities which led him to mistreat others, his belief that he has not ‘molded’ himself into an individual [she] would want to have children with, and that he had wanted children with her,” investigators wrote.
According to the affidavit, the defendant told detectives after Miranda that he was upset because, even though they hadn’t divorced, “yet she had gotten pregnant” with another man. The marriage had not been going well, and they had separated in September, but he hoped they could reconcile.
“Maybe she will come back someday, but not for me. McBride allegedly wrote, “But in many ways, I killed her.”
He allegedly purchased a gun and ammunition a few days prior to the shooting with the intention of killing her, the baby, and himself. McBride stated that he and Netherland had spent Sunday shopping at Goodwill before returning to her home to hang out.
According to the affidavit, they were talking in the bathroom while he sat on the bed. He reportedly stated that shooting her “made sense in that moment,” so he fired five shots into her back. She never saw him shoot, he stated.
“Certainly what is alleged is that this person went to great lengths to carry out what he intended to do,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears told local Fox affiliate WXIN.
According to police, Netherland underwent at least two surgeries: one to remove the fetus and another to treat her internal injuries. She remains in the hospital. McBride is currently being held at the Marion County Jail without bond. He’s charged with attempted murder and feticide.
