One person was hurt after a car caught fire in Omaha

OMAHA, Nebraska – A man is hospitalized after a car caught fire near downtown Omaha early Friday.

According to a social media post Friday by the Omaha Police Officers Association, an officer, Lt. Martinez, arrived to find a man and a burning car.

OFD Chief Coby Werner reports that crews were dispatched at around 1:45 a.m.

A fire broke out near 17th and Nicholas streets.

According to OPOA, the officer extracted the man from the vehicle, extinguished the fire, and provided assistance until medics arrived.

According to Chief Werner, the man in the car was taken to Nebraska Medicine before being transported to Lincoln’s burn unit.

According to OPOA, Lt. Martinez sustained minor injuries in the incident but was treated and released.

The cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
