The Douglas County Sheriff's Office provides guidelines for ICE involvement

OMAHA – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has established protocols for dealing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In a document obtained by First Alert 6 on Thursday, the DCSO outlined their protocol for working with ICE following the Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

This document was sent to correct any potential misinformation about the DCSO’s involvement with ICE and to “stand on the foundational truth of the matter.”

  • DCSO members do not have authority to detain any person for a federal detainer.
  • At the Courthouse or otherwise, it is the responsibility of ICE agents to investigate, detain, and arrest persons suspected of immigration violations.
  • Absent a warrant, DCSO members do not have any direct involvement with the efforts of ICE agents to detain any person at the Courthouse or any other location.
  • DCSO members do not have access to any ICE database utilized to determine a person’s immigration status.
  • DCSO command has been notified that any immigration-related request from ICE will require a Captain (or above) level advisement.
  • On a case by case basis, DCSO has been, and will remain, an active and professional partner to other law enforcement agencies at every level to include local, state, and federal.
  • DCSO operations are guided by State and local laws, CALEA-accredited best practice policies, and professional ethics.
  • DCSO’s operational goal is keep to Douglas County as safe as possible with a focus on criminal activity that affects the public safety of any and all residents.
