It was a rare sight for Americans to see all of the living presidents in one room at Jimmy Carter’s funeral yesterday (Jan. 9), but Sunny Hostin was focused on one moment in particular: an interaction between Barack Obama and Donald Trump.
On this morning’s episode of The View, Hostin wondered how the two could have had such a friendly moment after being seen laughing together at the ceremony.
After all, Trump and Obama do not exactly have a good track record, as Trump repeatedly questioned Obama’s citizenship during his presidency and demanded to see his birth certificate, among other things.
“I am very curious about what Donald Trump could have possibly said to make President Obama smile,” Hostin said on today’s show. “I do not know if it was a ‘That was dumb’ smile, or if it was something that he was truly engaged by.”
As a clip of the two presidents’ interaction played during The View, Hostin exclaimed, “See that smile, see that smile?” So I am reading shady things into it, but I found it entertaining.”
Ana Navarro appeared to agree, complimenting Obama on his manners.
“Somebody give Barack Obama a Best Actor Oscar right now,” she said. “The guy is classy and they are at a funeral, right?”
During an interview with NBC News yesterday, Trump offered his own explanation for the chummy moment with Obama. The president-elect admitted, “I did not realize how friendly it looked.”
He went on, “I said, ‘Boy, they look like two people that like each other.'” We probably do. We have slightly different philosophies, right? But we probably do. I do not know. We just got along. But I got along with almost everyone.
As for Obama, his adviser had not responded to NBC’s request for comment by the time of publication.
