Bitter cold temperatures and snowstorms cause complications for Omaha's outside workers

OMAHA – Walking outside in Omaha right now feels like stepping into a freezer. Colder, even.

Nonetheless, outdoor workers braved the elements.

“Someone has to do it,” explained Andres Cardenas of Aztec Contracting.

Aztec Contracting crews were out Monday afternoon cleaning the streets and plowing piles of snow. Cardenas arrived prepared, bundled up in multiple layers, and ensured that his coworkers remained warm.

“We have a couple of guys shoveling, but they will be out temporarily and go back in their cars heat up for a bit then get back out,” says Cardenas.

Despite the frigid temperatures, Cardenas insists that working conditions are the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of others.

“Gotta keep the streets clean, because they get dangerous,” Cardenas stated.

Even in the cold and snow, Jason King, the owner of King’s Moving, goes ahead with his moving day.

“In the move-in business it is different than some businesses,” Mr. King explained. “We can not shut down because people are closing one house and moving into another. “It is like a domino effect.”

He admitted that running his business in cold weather is difficult, and that sometimes hauling their big truck through the icy slush is a challenge.

However, he and his team are driven by their mission.

“We are just about providing a good service to the customer,” Mr. King explained.

Even on bad weather days, Cardenas believes that business comes first.

“Everybody has to feed their families,” Cardenas stated.
