OMAHA, Neb. – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for a large area of southwest Iowa and eastern Nebraska, extending from Tabor, Iowa, to Lincoln, Nebraska, and including numerous cities such as Omaha, Council Bluffs, and Bellevue.
The National Weather Service issued the advisory, which is in effect from 9 p.m. this evening until 9 a.m. CST Saturday.
Nebraska’s affected counties include Platte, Colfax, Dodge, Washington, Butler, Saunders, Douglas, Sarpy, Seward, Lancaster, Cass, Otoe, Saline, Jefferson, Gage, Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee, and Richardson.
The main concern is freezing drizzle, which is expected to result in a thin layer of ice. Accumulations are expected to range from 0.03 to 0.08 inch. This may appear to be a small amount, but even a thin layer of ice can cause hazardous travel conditions.
The National Weather Service warns that untreated surfaces will become slick, making driving more dangerous.
Motorists are advised to slow down and use extreme caution. Pedestrians should exercise caution, particularly when navigating stairs, sidewalks, and driveways, as these surfaces may be icy and slippery.
Drivers in Nebraska can get the most up-to-date road conditions by dialing 511. The National Weather Service advises residents to prepare for slippery roads and to allow extra time for travel.
