Dundee residents had the opportunity to ask questions directly to several candidates running for city office. Many neighbors wanted to know about public safety, affordable housing, and street repairs.
Neighbors speak with City of Omaha Candidates at Dundee forum; discuss streets, taxes, and housing.
Kristen Beat lives in Dundee and wanted to meet the local officials who represent her voice.
“I think local candidates impact us more than a federal policy and I really wanted to get a stance on their issues,” Beat told me.
The Dundee Memorial Park Association hosted the forum Monday night. KMTV asked the audience what they wanted to hear from Mayor Jean Stothert and mayoral candidate John Ewing.
“Want to chat with them about what they see in terms of transportation for the city, city planning, and property taxes,” Beat told me.
“I also wanted to meet John Ewing and his wife and what Mayor Jean Stothert had to say about the streets,” Colleen Richardson told me.
Mayor Stothert and Ewing spoke with several neighbors. Almost every attendee wanted to hear about the streets. KMTV asked both for their solutions.
Ewing concentrated on changes to the existing system.
“For example, if we use the wrong concrete mix to repair our streets for 12 years, we end up with more potholes and damage to the streets, and we have to repair them again because we did not use the right material.” Find out what the right materials are and which cities, such as Minneapolis, are using them without experiencing the same problems,” said Ewing.
Stothert discussed her current successes and future plans.
“We spent an additional $400 million on Omaha’s roads. You know, we have already rehabilitated about 1000 miles, which is one-fifth of all roads, so when they say roads are an issue, I can point to what I have done and all of the progress we have made, and then we are going forward with it,” said Stothert.
The City of Omaha election is on Tuesday, May 13th.
