Legendary Omaha baseball coach Bill Olson dies at age 85

OMAHA – Bill Olson, a former Omaha Northwest Baseball Coach and Nebraska High School Athletics Hall of Famer, died at the age of 85, sources confirmed on Sunday.

Olson coached baseball in Nebraska for 35 years, guiding the Omaha Northwest Huskies to six state championships.

In 1983, Olson’s Huskies were the top high school team in the country.

Olson won over 1,500 games as a coach, with a winning percentage of over.700. He also won eight American Legion baseball state championships and finished third in the World Series in 1985.

In addition, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee named Olson Development Coach of the Year in 1997.

Gregg Olson, Olson’s son, won four state titles as a pitcher for Omaha Northwest and was a first-round pick in the MLB Draft. He played relief for ten MLB teams and was named an All-Star in 1990 and American League Rookie of the Year in 1989.

Gregg Olson has also been inducted into the Baltimore Orioles and Nebraska High School Athletics Halls of Fame.
