Nebraska Football Announces Schedule for Husker Games

The football schedule for this weekend’s Husker games is available.

The Husker football portion of the day will now officially include a scrimmage, in addition to several other activities. Activities begin at 2 p.m. CDT on Saturday, following an hour of 7-on-7 women’s flag football between the Midlan and UNL All-Stars.

The scrimmage will take place over four quarters, with activities preceding and following each quarter. Coach Matt Rhule decided to add live football this past week.

“I am going to go live and do some Red and White stuff,” Rhule announced on Thursday. “We have a number of players who may be playing their final game in that stadium. We have a group of guys fighting to make the 105. We have a group of guys who, if they can not play here, need a tape to play somewhere else.

“I waited until after the portal closed. The portal will close on Friday. The guys who are firmly established in their positions will not play. Some guys will ask if they want to play or not, but those who are battling – some are twos, but they want to prove they are one.”

Rhule stated that he owed it to the players who had gone through the rigours of being a Husker to get them on the field in front of the fans.

“If you love the walk-on programme and you love Husker football and you love those kids that have, in the face of being told that they are not going to make the 105, still did the mat drills this winter – I do not know if I could do that,” says Rhule.

“Kids coming from other schools say, ‘Coach, this is demanding.'” Guys leave here occasionally because it is too demanding. We have guys who follow this schedule after being told they will not be in the 105.

“So I will put them out there and invite my wife and kids to come watch them play. It could be their last time, and they might end up being a starter here one day; there is someone playing in this thing next Saturday who will be a starter one day.”

Aside from the scrimmage, the day will feature former greats, current starters, and even media participating in various activities.

“We’ll celebrate the former players, we’ll celebrate the guys. You can see the Dylans (Raiola) and the Jacorys (Barney Jr.) out there doing a variety of activities,” Rhule said.

These additional activities, which are set up similarly to the NFL Pro Bowl, include specialist competitions, strongest man, quarterback shootout, agility and skills showdown, a media challenge, and the fastest man. Non-football activities include the John Cook Roping Round Up at halftime and a wing eating contest at Memorial Stadium to wrap up the day.

The Husker Games will move away from Memorial Stadium, with a soccer scrimmage against Wyoming at Hibner Stadium and a volleyball exhibition against Kansas at the newly named John Cook Arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Centre.
