Omaha Tragedy One Killed, One Hurt in Shocking Apartment Shooting

OMAHA – One person was killed and another is in custody following a shooting in a North Omaha apartment building Sunday evening.

Police are investigating the incident, which occurred around 6 p.m. Sunday in an apartment building near Florence Boulevard and Browne Street.

According to the OPD update, officers responded to the scene after receiving a call about gunshots at the apartments.

When officers arrived, they went to the sixth floor and met 50-year-old Billy Dorral. According to reports, he then got into a shootout with police.

Officers discovered Eric Bechtolt, 45, at the scene and pronounced him dead, according to the OPD.

Dorral was transported to Nebraska Medicine with non-life-threatening injuries. He was then charged with first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, felon in possession of a firearm, and three counts of using a weapon to commit a crime.

Police say an officer was injured during the incident, but it is unclear whether the injury was caused by gunfire.

The investigation is ongoing, but police tell First Alert that six people are allowed in and out of the apartment building.

According to the report, officers’ body-worn cameras captured portions of the incident. The officers involved have been placed on paid critical leave, as per OPD policy, and will be interviewed soon.
