In the United States, not all Social Security beneficiaries get their payments at the same time. The Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a monthly payment schedule based on different groups. While some people already received their money in April, others—especially early retirees—will get their next payment in May 2025.
For this reason, it’s important to know which group you belong to and when you should expect your payment. This helps avoid confusion or worry if the money doesn’t arrive when expected. Let’s look at who will be getting paid on May 1st and 2nd, and what they should keep in mind.
Who Will Get the Social Security Payment on May 2, 2025?
The May 2, 2025 payment is for Group 1 retirees. These are people who started receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997. If you fall in this group, you always receive your monthly check at the beginning of the month, usually on the first business day.
Unlike other groups, this payment is not based on your birth date. The only thing that matters is when you started receiving your retirement benefits. If it was before May 1997, your next payment will be sent on Thursday, May 2.
The amount you receive depends on your employment history, how many years you worked, and the age at which you retired. In 2025:
- The maximum Social Security retirement check can be up to $5,108
- For disability benefits (SSDI), the maximum is $4,018
- Most people, however, receive lower amounts depending on their personal records

Extra SSI Payment Coming on May 1, 2025
Before the May 2 retirement payment, the SSA will issue another payment on May 1, 2025. This is for people who qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)—a program for elderly or disabled individuals with very low income.
The SSI payment is always made on the first day of the month, unless that day falls on a weekend or holiday. In May 2025, May 1 falls on a Wednesday, so the payment will be sent on that day as usual.
Some people qualify for both SSI and regular Social Security benefits. If that’s you, you’ll receive two payments on two consecutive days:
- May 1: SSI payment
- May 2: Regular monthly Social Security benefit
What Should You Do Before the Payment Date?
If you’re in Group 1, make sure your account is active and updated. Also, ensure your payment method—whether Direct Deposit or debit card—is working properly. If you also receive SSI, check for both payments in your account.
Being informed about the official payment schedule can save you a lot of stress. You don’t need to worry if your money doesn’t arrive in April—because it’s planned for early May.
