The Social Security Administration (SSA) has released its April 2025 payment schedule, and millions of Americans, including retirees, disabled individuals, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients, are either receiving or expecting their benefits soon.
This month’s payments are based on your birth date and the type of benefit you receive. Alongside the regular schedule, important updates from the new Social Security Fairness Act are bringing thousands of extra dollars to many public service retirees.
Here’s a full breakdown of everything you need to know.
Summary of April 2025 Social Security Payments
So far, three major payments have already been made this month:
- April 1: SSI (Supplemental Security Income) recipients
- April 3: Beneficiaries who started receiving Social Security before May 1997
- April 9: Retirees born between the 1st and 10th of any month
Still to come:
- April 16: Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th of any month
- April 23: Beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st of any month
Note: If a payment date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deposit is made on the previous working day. If your payment is delayed, the SSA advises you to wait three business days before contacting them.

New Increases from the Social Security Fairness Act
Starting from January 2025, the Social Security Fairness Act removed two major rules that had reduced benefits for many public workers:
These rules affected teachers, firefighters, police, and federal workers who had non-Social Security pensions.
Here’s what the changes mean:
Retroactive Payments
Between February and March 2025, the SSA paid out $7.5 billion in retroactive funds to 1.1 million people. On average, each person received $6,710.
Monthly Payment Increases (Effective from April)
Those affected by the old WEP and GPO rules will now receive permanent increases in their monthly payments:
- $360 more for affected retirees
- $700 more for spouses
- $1,190 more for widows
These increases are being rolled out gradually. Due to staff reductions caused by federal budget cuts, some recipients may see the new amount in May or June.
SSA’s Advice to Beneficiaries
The SSA recommends:
- Do not contact them about the increase until after receiving your April payment
- Check your online SSA account regularly for updates
- If there are issues, wait at least three business days after your payment date before reaching out
