In April 2025, millions of Americans receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits will continue to receive their payments according to the usual SSA schedule. These monthly benefits offer vital financial support to workers who are no longer able to work due to a disability.
Whether you’re receiving SSDI for yourself or on behalf of a loved one, it’s important to know when the payment is coming, how much you should expect, and what steps to take if it doesn’t arrive on time.
SSDI Payment Dates for April 2025
SSDI payments follow a Wednesday-based schedule depending on your date of birth. For April 2025, the payment dates are:
- April 9: For beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of any month
- April 16: For beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th
- April 23: For those born between the 21st and 31st
This structure applies to most SSDI beneficiaries, except for certain special groups.
Who Gets Paid Early?
If you started receiving SSDI before May 1997, your payment doesn’t follow the birthdate rule. Instead, you receive your payment on the 3rd of each month. The same date applies to those who:
- Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) along with SSDI
- Live outside the United States
- Have their Medicare premiums paid by their state
So, for these cases, April’s payment was made on April 3, and May’s payment is set for Friday, May 2, because May 3 falls on a Saturday.
How Much Are SSDI Payments in April 2025?
In 2025, SSDI payments received a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), which increased benefit amounts for many. Here’s a quick look at the typical amounts:
- Average for disabled workers: $1,580 per month
- With a spouse or children: $2,826 per month
- Maximum monthly SSDI benefit: $4,018
Your actual benefit depends on your lifetime earnings, specifically your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME), and the age when your disability began.

When Do Payments Arrive?
SSDI payments are sent via direct deposit or paper check. Direct deposits begin processing at 12:01 a.m. on your scheduled date. However, physical checks can take up to three business days to arrive in your mailbox.
If your payment is delayed, the SSA recommends contacting your bank first. If there’s still no update after three business days, you should reach out to the Social Security Administration directly through one of the following:
- Phone: 1-800-772-1213
- TTY: 1-800-325-0778 (for hearing-impaired)
- Online: Login.gov (for accessing your SSA account)
- In-person: Visit your local SSA office
What About VA Benefits?
If you also receive Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits, those are paid on the 1st of each month. So, your next VA benefit will arrive on May 1, 2025. Note: Due to the calendar, March’s VA payment was sent early, on April 1, which some recipients may still be budgeting from.
Missed or Delayed Payments: What to Do
If you haven’t received your SSDI payment:
- Wait 3 business days after your scheduled date.
- Check with your bank to make sure the deposit wasn’t delayed on their end.
