The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program in the United States provides monthly payments to support senior citizens, people with disabilities, and low-income individuals. The next SSI payment is scheduled for May 1, 2025, according to the latest update from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

These payments are usually made on the first day of each month, but if that date falls on a weekend or a holiday, the payment is moved to the last business day before it. For example, the June 2025 SSI payment, originally due on Sunday, June 1, will be sent out on Friday, May 30.

How Much Is the SSI Payment for May 2025?

Thanks to a 2.5% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) added at the start of 2025, the maximum monthly SSI amounts are:

$967 for individuals
$1,450 for couples
$484 for “essential persons” (a rare, legacy benefit)

These amounts have been in effect since January 2025 and help beneficiaries keep up with rising prices.

The essential person category is no longer available for new applicants, but some long-time recipients still receive this benefit because they qualified when the rule was active.

How Many People Receive SSI in the U.S.?

As of February 2025, the SSA reported that around 7.4 million Americans were receiving SSI benefits:

4.88 million were getting only SSI
2.52 million were receiving SSI along with other Social Security benefits

This group includes older adults, people with severe disabilities, and even children with critical medical needs. Over 99% of recipients get their money through direct deposit into their bank accounts, while others receive paper checks if they haven’t registered bank details with the SSA.

Who Is Eligible for SSI?

To receive SSI, you must meet specific criteria set by the SSA. You must be:

65 years or older, or
Legally blind, or
Have a serious disability that prevents work for at least 12 months

In addition, your income and resources must be limited:

Individuals: $2,000 or less in countable resources
Couples: $3,000 or less in countable resources

Your home and one vehicle are not counted toward these limits.

Other important requirements include:

U.S. citizenship or legal resident status
Living in any of the 50 states, Washington D.C., or Northern Mariana Islands
Not living full-time in a government-funded facility like a hospital or jail
