In the United States, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends retirement payments every month. But not everyone gets their money at the same time. Your payment date depends on the group you belong to. There are four groups — Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, and Group 4 — and each group receives their payment on a different week of the month.
This system helps organize payments smoothly, but it also means you need to know your group to find out when your payment is due. With two more payment dates left in April 2025 — April 16 and April 23 — here’s what you need to know about who qualifies for each payment.
Who Can Receive Social Security on April 16?
If you haven’t yet received your Social Security check in April, you may get it on April 16 — but only if you meet two important requirements.
To qualify for the April 16 payment, you must:
- Have started receiving Social Security after May 1997
- Have a birthday that falls between the 11th and 20th of any month
If you meet both conditions, you’re in Group 3, and your payment will be sent on April 16, 2025.
However, just because SSA sends the check on April 16 doesn’t mean you will get it that same day. It depends on how you chose to receive your payment. If you have Direct Deposit activated, the money will be in your account quickly. If you’re receiving a paper check by mail, it might take a few more days.
Who Can Receive Social Security on April 23?
If you don’t qualify for the April 16 payment, don’t worry — the next round of payments will happen on April 23, which is the final Social Security payment of the month.
To qualify for the April 23 payment, you must meet these two requirements:
- You started getting Social Security after May 1997
- Your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of any month
If you meet both conditions, you belong to Group 4, and your check will be sent on April 23, 2025.
Just like with the previous payment, the method you use to collect your money will affect when it actually arrives. Direct Deposit ensures a faster transaction, while receiving a physical check could take longer.
Why Knowing Your Group Matters
Understanding your Social Security group is more important than it seems. For many retirees, these monthly checks are the main source of income, so knowing exactly when you will be paid helps you plan your finances better.
- Each month follows a similar pattern: Group 1: Early in the month
