OMAHA – One of the men arrested in connection with a drug bust in May 2024 was sentenced on Friday.

In March 2025, Assef Shami pleaded “no contest” and was sentenced to 18 months probation for possession of a controlled substance.

Shami is the first of four individuals charged in connection with the bust to be sentenced.

Gabriel Nuno, who pleaded guilty to charges in April, had his case deferred to problem-solving court after he turned 21. Should he successfully complete Young Adult Court, he will be able to withdraw his guilty plea.

Nuno’s case would then be decided by the Douglas County Attorney, who could choose to dismiss all of the charges against him.

The two other suspects in the case, Helal Alshohatee and Yaser Shohatee, are still awaiting trial.

The men were apprehended during an investigation by the Omaha Police Department’s Narcotics Squad into Goodies Vape & Tobacco.

A search of the store in May 2024 revealed a “large amount” of illegal THC products, psychedelic drugs, and firearms. Douglas County deputies also raided a home a few blocks away, seizing 54 pounds of marijuana and approximately $140,000 in drug proceeds.

According to court records, Shami, a Goodies employee, left the store owner’s home with glass smoking paraphernalia, marijuana, THC cartridges, and 89 mushroom bars.

Police had previously sent the mushroom bars to a lab, which tested them and discovered they contained psilocin, a Schedule I controlled substance.
