The human remains of a sex offender have reportedly been discovered.
According to ABC affiliate WMTV, police were notified of the remains on April 21 after a man discovered them in a shed across the street from the New Hampshire State Prison.
According to ABC affiliate WMUR, an autopsy on Monday, May 5, determined that the remains belonged to 59-year-old Michael Schilz. The Department of Corrections confirmed Schilz was a convicted sex offender on parole.
According to reports, the remains had likely been there for some time.
According to the Concord Monitor, Lt. Thomas Yerkes stated that the remains could have been in the area for years due to the skeletons’ condition.
Yerkes told the outlet that the cause of death has yet to be determined, and no charges have been filed.
PEOPLE contacted the Conrad Police Department, and the NH Department of Corrections declined to comment at this time.
According to the Concord Monitor, Schilz was “convicted in 2005 of aggravated felonious sexual assault on a minor.”
Following his prison sentence, he was released in December 2021. He was also wanted for violating his parole following his initial conviction, according to the outlet.
According to WMUR, Schilz, who officials said was homeless after his release, was one of the Department of Corrections’ fugitives of the week in October 2023.
