A woman from Omaha was fined for Medicaid fraud

An Omaha woman must repay more than $12,000 and serve five years on probation after pleading no contest to a Medicaid fraud scheme on May 20, 2025. District Judge Tressa Alioth convicted Lisa Mitchell of Theft by Unlawful Taking, a Class IV felony.

Lisa Mitchell, 57, was a Medicaid personal assistance services provider in Omaha who primarily served residents of Crown Tower, an Omaha Housing Authority apartment complex.

The Medicaid Fraud and Patient Abuse Unit of the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office discovered that Mitchell billed for services she did not provide for three Medicaid recipients who required personal assistance. Mitchell had been banned and barred from Crown Tower, but she continued to bill Nebraska Medicaid as if she were still providing services.

As part of her probation, Mitchell must repay Nebraska Medicaid $12,008.31. According to federal regulations, she will also be barred from providing or billing for services covered by any federally funded health care program.

Nebraska Medicaid’s Program Integrity Unit assisted with the investigation, and the Medicaid Fraud and Patient Abuse Unit prosecuted the case.
