Police in southeastern Australia are investigating the deaths of two young boys who were discovered dead during a welfare check.
The boys, ages 6 and 7, were discovered dead in Coonabarabran, New South Wales, on Monday, May 4, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian Broadcasting Company, and news.com.au, citing NSW police.
According to reports, authorities arrested a 66-year-old woman on the scene and transported her to the hospital.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the woman allegedly called the Department of Communities and Justice and informed them that the children had died.
Responding officers discovered the boys dead inside the house. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and news.com.au, police have stated that there is no threat to the larger community.
The Sydney Morning Herald and news.com.au have identified the woman as the children’s grandmother, though she was not named in the reports. The boys’ identities were not revealed.
She has not been charged.
“What has occurred is terrible, and as a state, we share the community of Coonabarabran’s grief at the loss of two young boys who had their entire futures ahead of them,” NSW Premier Chris Minns said, according to news.com.au.
