Police say a 3-year-old girl died days after her father allegedly shot her in a Surprise home.
Police are now working with prosecutors to amend the criminal charges against Dariusz Modrzejewski, 48, to include homicide.
Authorities say officers responded to the area of 184th Drive and Bell Road, west of the Loop 303 freeway, around 6:30 p.m. last Thursday. When they arrived with crisis negotiators and SWAT teams, they heard a gunshot, prompting them to rush in and find the toddler, who was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
During Modrzejewski’s initial court appearance on Friday, prosecutors stated that the girl was shot in the head. Prosecutors also believed he posed a flight risk because he held dual citizenship in Poland.
Modrzejewski was initially charged with multiple aggravated assault counts, including the use of a deadly weapon and assaulting a child under the age of 15. As of Monday afternoon, he was being held on a $1 million bond.
