Ga. man arrested almost 20 years after his wife was fatally shot at their business

DOUGLAS, Ga. – Investigators made an arrest in the cold case murder of a 39-year-old mother who was discovered shot to death at the business she co-owned with her husband nearly two decades ago.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced that Jon Worrell, 58, was arrested on May 20 on charges of malice murder, felony murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and aggravated battery in connection with Doris Worrell’s death. He was found in Missouri and will be extradited to Coffee County, Georgia, to face charges.

On September 20, 2006, Coffee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Jon’s Sports Park after receiving a report of a shooting and discovered Doris Worrell dead in an office.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrived on the scene and took over the investigation, pursuing leads both in the United States and abroad. Following his wife’s death, Jon Worrell relocated to Costa Rica with his girlfriend, Paola Yarberry. Yarberry had been living with the married couple and developed feelings for Jon Worrell.
