COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – Council Bluffs police conducted a brief but effective traffic enforcement campaign last week.

Last Tuesday morning, officers from the Council Bluffs Police, Carter Lake Police, the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa State Patrol cracked down on speeding and “move over” violations on Interstates 80 and 29.

Between 8 a.m. and noon on April 22, authorities issued 102 citations and warnings, including 30 to drivers who failed to move over when a vehicle was stopped on the shoulder.

Drivers are required by law to move over and give space to stalled or stopped vehicles on the side of the road whenever possible. If it is not possible to move over, drivers should slow down while passing.

In addition to the 30 “move over” violations, authorities issued 43 speeding tickets during the four-hour period. According to CBPD, the highest recorded speed was by a driver going 104 mph in a 65-mph zone.

The enforcement campaign was launched in memory of Iowa DOT employee Matthew Dickerson, who was killed in a work zone on Interstate 80 in Neola last year.
