One person is in custody, and the situation is secure after Omaha police talk with an armed man

OMAHA – Police spent more than an hour Thursday night negotiating with an armed suspect on the southwest edge of Downtown Omaha.

Omaha Police told First Alert 6 that officers responded to the area of 19th and Jones Street, near the Douglas County jail, shortly before 7 p.m. after receiving a report of a man walking around with what appeared to be a handgun.

Authorities established a perimeter around the neighborhood and received numerous calls, which assisted them in locating the suspect. Crisis negotiators and a mental health clinician both responded.

According to police, the confrontation ended safely when the man laid down his weapon and allowed officers to take him into custody. No one was injured, and there is no immediate threat to public safety.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
