CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – A 66-year-old woman allegedly shot and killed her husband after their dog prevented him from attacking her.
According to a Cedar Falls Public Safety release, on June 4, Cedar Falls Police responded to a home on Newland Drive for a report of a domestic dispute and possible shooting. Officers discovered the body of David Charlton, 72, at the scene.
Kimberly Charlton told authorities that her husband attempted to physically assault her before being stopped by their dog, according to KGAN-TV.
David Charlton allegedly threatened to beat their dog with a cane, prompting his wife to grab a gun and tell him, “I am going to shoot you if you do not stop.” Charlton reportedly told investigators that she shot her husband in the middle of the back, killing him.
Charlton was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. She remains in the Black Hawk County Jail on a $1 million bond.
