Ahoy! The captains start dropping their yachts into the water just before 11am on Sundays. The Cove at Gene Leahy Mall, a trapezoid body of water about 50’x60′, seems small though is large enough for several yachts to zoom around. Over the course of an hour up to fourteen tiny motors whir across the waves, make donuts, and explore the filter intake chutes.
Omaha visitors are surprised to see the activity on the open seas. Families make an outing of it, young captains come out to learn the yacht’s controls. Everyone is invited to sit a spell and enjoy the mid-day weather and breath of fresh (not-salty) air.
Founding members Elizabeth, Erin, Steve, and John have been out here every Sunday since July 10th, 2022. Attendance increases every week: more boats on the water and more members uniformed in their Leahy Mall Yacht Club t-shirts. Unofficial membership is as easy as buying the shirt from their online store. So far the group has sold 22 shirts. There are ideas in the works for future regatas and yacht parades – though too early to give any details.
You can bring your own remote control boat, borrow one from another LMYC captain, or get one from the Leahy Mall Games cart (which moves around daily). Mind the the batteries, as you don’t lose motor power in the middle of The Cove. The Cove is located on the east side of the 10th Street bridge, and south of The Pond. And if anyone asks, the Barbie incident was an accident.
