Police confirm the cause of death and the identity of the body discovered near railroad tracks in Valley

Authorities released new information Wednesday about a body discovered near railroad tracks in a small eastern Nebraska town on New Year’s Day.

The deceased was identified by Valley Police as Lisa A. Reed of Elkhorn. Around 10 a.m. on January 1, officers responded to a report that Reed’s body had been discovered next to the railroad tracks near Spruce and Front Street in Valley.

According to witnesses, Reed had scheduled an Uber pickup from a local restaurant on New Year’s Eve. Police believe she made alternative plans and canceled her Uber ride sometime during the night.

Investigators obtained security footage from a business near where Reed’s body was discovered, showing a “shadowy figure” walking toward the railroad tracks and falling to the ground just before 1 a.m. on January 1.

Valley Police believe the figure in the video was Reed, who had decided to walk back to her home in Elkhorn when she tripped and fell. The Douglas County Coroner determined Reed died as a result of a head injury sustained while falling.

Police said the security footage showed no trains or other people near Reed when she died. No foul play is suspected.
