Gypsy Rose Blanchard has used a viral TikTok trend to reflect on her difficult past, including the 2015 murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, and the eight and a half years she spent in prison.
In a video shared by influencer Natalie Reynolds on March 21, Gypsy, now 34, participated in the “We listen and we don’t judge” social media trend, which encourages individuals to share their secrets and personal struggles in a lighthearted way.
Gypsy Rose’s Candid Moment on TikTok
In the video, Gypsy stands at a kitchen counter, speaking directly to the camera. She begins by referencing the tragic events surrounding her mother’s death in 2015.
“We listen and we don’t judge: I went to prison for eight and a half years because I …” she pauses, makes a choking sound, and adds, “… my own mom.”
Reynolds, visibly shocked, reacts to Gypsy’s revelation, but Gypsy quickly reminds her, “Hey, we listen and we don’t judge.” The conversation then moves on to other topics, and both women continue sharing personal stories.
Mixed Reactions to Gypsy Rose’s TikTok Video
The video quickly garnered attention, and many commenters expressed their disbelief and discomfort with Gypsy’s use of humor in discussing such a sensitive topic.
One commenter wrote, “Nothing funny about this at all,” while another commented, “That wasn’t cute nor funny.” Other users questioned why the video was posted in the first place, with one asking, “Why would you post this?”
The Backstory: Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s Role in Her Mother’s Death
Gypsy’s story is one of tragedy and manipulation. She was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a psychological disorder in which a caregiver falsifies or induces illness in a dependent to gain attention.
Gypsy conspired with her then-boyfriend, Nicholas “Nick” Godejohn, to murder her 48-year-old mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, in 2015.
In 2016, Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder in 2018 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an additional 25 years for armed criminal action.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s Life After Prison
Gypsy was released from prison in December 2023, and she has since opened up about her journey toward healing and growth. In a now-deleted video posted after her release, she shared her thoughts on moving forward: “I’ve taken accountability and now, I take back my life.
When I accepted my sentence, I accepted the weight of my choices. I served my time. That was my accountability and I’ve carried it for years.”
She expressed a desire to move beyond her past, saying, “The next chapter of my life will be one of healing. Of growth. Of reclaiming my life.”
Gypsy, who is now a mother to 14-month-old daughter Aurora with her boyfriend Ken Urker, emphasized that she is focused on finding peace and self-forgiveness. “This is freedom. And I’m moving forward with clarity, peace, and self-forgiveness,” she wrote.
“The Justice system has decided. The case is closed. This is justice for Dee Dee, as well as myself, who the system failed all my life,” she added, concluding, “Justice was served and so was my time.”
