A 35-year-old California woman is facing serious charges after allegedly striking and killing 15-year-old Juliani “Gio” Moreno, a freshman and football player, while he was crossing the street with his girlfriend.
Tiffany Mercado has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon, reckless driving causing injury, and DUI-related offenses following the tragic incident in Parlier, a city in the Fresno area.
The Tragic Incident
The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. on a Tuesday at the intersection of Mendocino and Parlier Avenues. According to Mercedes Solano, Gio’s girlfriend, the two were crossing the street hand-in-hand, on their way to the store.
Solano described the moment of impact as sudden and overwhelming, telling local NBC affiliate KSEE, “I was holding his hand. We were walking shoulder to shoulder here, and it all went by so quick. It was like an explosion.”
She explained that after the crash, Gio was “completely gone” and quickly found him lying in a nearby field. Officers arrived at the scene but tragically found that Gio had already died. Solano, while injured from flying debris, survived the incident and is otherwise okay.
Driver’s Actions and Arrest
After striking Gio, Mercado allegedly lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a nearby flower shop. The shop owner, Hermina Lopez, stated that the business, which was typically open at the time of the crash, decided to close early that day—a decision that likely saved lives. “We’re basically lucky to be alive,” Lopez told KSEE.
Mercado was arrested at the scene and later booked into the Fresno County Jail, where she remains without bond. Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 25, 2026.
Community Reaction and the Victim’s Legacy
Juliani “Gio” Moreno was a beloved freshman football player at Immanuel High School and was looking forward to participating in his team’s summer 7-on-7 drills.
His girlfriend, Mercedes, reflected on the loss, saying, “All his fun things he wanted to do in summer,” adding that they had plans for her to take him to Montana for the summer.
The tragic loss has left the community shaken, with Parlier Mayor Alma Beltran expressing deep sympathy for the Moreno family. In a Facebook post, Beltran wrote, “This is a loss that no family should ever have to endure.
City officials are taking this matter very seriously and are working swiftly to understand the full circumstances surrounding this incident.”
Moving Forward: Justice and Accountability
The case has garnered widespread attention, and local officials are committed to ensuring accountability and justice for Gio’s family.
The Fresno County authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident to determine the full extent of Mercado’s actions and ensure appropriate legal measures are taken.
