A Toledo, Ohio mother has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of her 7-year-old special needs son, Kristopher Snyder. The tragic incident, which shocked the community, involved the boy’s death from malnutrition and dehydration.
Samantha Hardiman, 30, will face a lengthy prison sentence after admitting her role in the boy’s death, marking the end of a heartbreaking case.
A Neglected Child Found Deceased
Toledo police responded to a distressing call on June 2, 2023, and arrived at the home on Freeman Street to find Kristopher deceased and alone in a playpen. The child was described by officers as being “extremely emaciated” and having pale skin.
Upon further investigation, the Lucas County Coroner confirmed that Kristopher’s death was a homicide caused by malnutrition and dehydration, which were exacerbated by cerebral palsy and epilepsy.
The medical examiner revealed the boy’s severe condition, noting that he had not seen a doctor in person for four years, with only telehealth appointments conducted during that time.
Neglect and Failure to Provide Adequate Care
Despite having ample food in the home, authorities discovered that Samantha Hardiman failed to provide her son with the necessary care. She had access to therapy services and even had opportunities to help Kristopher with the development of the muscles he needed to eat and sit up.
However, Hardiman neglected these opportunities and instead left her son alone in a room, where she had even painted the windows black to conceal the dire conditions inside the home.
Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney Julia R. Bates commented on the case, stating, “The defendant had numerous free therapy opportunities available to help Kristopher develop the muscles he needed to eat and sit up. Instead of accepting that help or providing a feeding tube, she neglected her son and left him alone in a room.”
Hardiman Pleads Guilty and Faces Sentencing
Hardiman pleaded guilty to murder in a plea deal earlier this month. In exchange, five other charges, including involuntary manslaughter and endangering children, were dismissed.
Prosecutors confirmed that Hardiman will serve 15 years to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 15 years. However, prosecutors have vowed to oppose her parole.
The Role of Boyfriend Joshua Mulvey
Hardiman’s boyfriend, Joshua Mulvey, 29, is also facing charges related to Kristopher’s death. He has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and is scheduled to go on trial on May 12, 2026.
According to prosecutors, Mulvey, who had lived with Hardiman and Kristopher for about two years, had a “basic duty” to ensure the child’s nutritional needs were met.
Mulvey has pleaded not guilty to the charges and expressed his frustration, saying, “I do not think I should be here in the first place, but that’s for another day.” He added, “I will be a part of this process. I need answers myself.”
A Heartbreaking Case of Abuse and Neglect
Kristopher’s weight at the time of his death was just 19 pounds, which is significantly underweight for a healthy child of his age. The average weight for a healthy 7-year-old boy is significantly higher, making Kristopher’s death an extreme case of neglect and abuse.
The case has drawn attention to the responsibilities of caregivers and the importance of ensuring the health and well-being of vulnerable children.
The conviction of Samantha Hardiman highlights the tragic consequences of neglect and failure to provide adequate care for a child in need. Kristopher’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of the duty parents and caregivers have to provide for their children’s basic needs.
As Hardiman faces sentencing and Mulvey prepares for trial, the community remains shaken by the extent of the abuse that occurred in this case.
