Janaina Pio Ferreira, a 30-year-old woman from North Charleston, has been arrested and charged after allegedly leaving eight young children unattended inside an apartment that caught fire. The children were found inside the apartment when emergency crews arrived, and no injuries were reported.
Incident Details
On March 12, 2026, at approximately 2:30 p.m., officers and firefighters responded to a fire at the Arbor Square Apartments located in the 2600 block of Otranto Road North. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered eight juveniles inside the apartment without any adult supervision.
Fortunately, the apartment’s fire suppression system activated, extinguishing the flames before firefighters arrived, preventing any casualties.
Shortly after authorities arrived, Ferreira returned to the scene with several additional children. Investigators soon determined that she had been operating an illegal daycare from her apartment.
Ferreira was responsible for the children’s care but had left them unattended when the fire broke out. She was arrested and charged with eight counts of unlawful conduct toward a child, one for each child allegedly left in the apartment during the fire.
Fire Investigation and Cause
According to the North Charleston Police Department (NCPD), the fire was caused by a faulty aftermarket knob on the stove, which was further ignited when a child allegedly left a backpack on top of the stove.
North Charleston Fire Department (NCFD) Chief Deputy Christian Rainey commented, “Kids, sometimes play with fire, sometimes they play with stoves, sometimes they turn on stoves. We could have been having a totally different talk today — a totally different story.”
Legal Actions and Reactions
After notifying the children’s parents, Ferreira was taken into custody at the scene and transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center. She is being held on $200,000 bond, with $25,000 for each child involved. Ferreira is scheduled for her first court appearance on May 1, 2026.
The incident has raised concerns about the dangers of unlicensed daycare operations. Tiffani Lockwood, the owner of a nearby licensed childcare center, expressed disbelief at parents sending their children to such illegal facilities. “You’re really playing Russian roulette with your kids,” she said.
Ferreira’s arrest highlights the serious risks of operating an unlicensed daycare and leaving children unsupervised in unsafe environments.
While this incident fortunately did not result in any injuries, it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of neglect and the importance of ensuring that children are cared for in safe, regulated environments.
