Police report that a mom discovered her daughter's stolen Hyundai and was shot in both legs while attempting to recover it

A Memphis woman was shot multiple times after attempting to recover her daughter’s stolen car from a shopping center parking lot. The incident, which took place on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at the Charlestowne Shops on Mount Moriah Road Extension, has led to charges against 23-year-old Marquis Byers.

The Shooting Incident

The mother, who was driving through the area, spotted her daughter’s stolen 2011 Hyundai Sonata in the parking lot. According to court documents, she parked her vehicle in front of the Sonata to block it from being driven away.

She then entered the car and attempted to open the hood when several gunshots rang out, hitting her in both legs.

After being shot, the woman saw two men entering a black BMW before she called 911. Memphis police arrived quickly, applying tourniquets to her legs to stop the bleeding. She was then transported to a nearby hospital, where she was reported to be in non-critical condition.

Investigation and Arrest

Surveillance footage from the area showed a man, later identified as Byers, exiting the BMW and firing shots at the mother. After the shooting, a woman got out of the BMW and confronted Byers, while another man took the gun that Byers allegedly dropped.

The two men then fled the scene, leaving the woman behind to assist the victim.

Authorities were able to trace the BMW to Byers and his associates. Byers was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. He is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail on a $125,000 bond.

Court and Legal Updates

Byers appeared in court earlier this week, though it remains unclear when his next hearing will take place. His two associates, who were with him during the incident, have not been charged at this time.
