A devastating strike on a hospital in Sudan’s western Darfur region last week left at least 64 people dead, including 13 children, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The attack on the Al Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur on Friday also left at least 89 others injured and rendered the hospital non-functional.
WHO Condemns Hospital Attack in Darfur
The strike on the Al Daein Teaching Hospital, a critical medical facility, has shocked the international community. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus condemned the attack in a post on X and called for an end to the violence in Sudan.
He expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in the country, which has already resulted in widespread destruction and a staggering number of casualties.
The Escalating Conflict in Sudan
Sudan has been in turmoil since April 2023, when a power struggle between the military and the rival paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), escalated into a full-scale war. The conflict has devastated the country, leading to widespread violence and loss of life.
While the RSF has blamed the military for the strike on the Al Daein hospital, the Sudanese army denies the accusation. Two anonymous military officials stated that the strike was actually targeting a nearby police station, but they were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter.
The Toll of the War on Sudan
The war in Sudan has had a catastrophic impact, with the United Nations estimating that over 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict. However, humanitarian organizations warn that the true death toll could be much higher.
The WHO has reported that more than 2,000 people have been killed in attacks on medical facilities since the war began.
Tedros Ghebreyesus called for an immediate de-escalation of the conflict, saying, “Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been inflicted. The time has come to de-escalate the conflict in Sudan.”
International Outrage and Calls for Action
The attack on the Al Daein Teaching Hospital highlights the devastating impact of the ongoing war in Sudan, particularly on civilians and healthcare facilities. The international community continues to call for urgent measures to end the violence and provide much-needed aid to those affected by the conflict.
