Deacon's Funeral Mass Set for Weekend in Omaha

OMAHA, Neb.St. Peter Catholic Church has announced the details for the memorial services for Deacon John James Zak, who was tragically found dead in his home last week.

The church will hold a vigil at 7 p.m. on Friday, followed by the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The burial will take place immediately after the Mass at the church.

A Life of Service

Deacon Zak, who was ordained in 1998, served the St. Peter Catholic Church parish for over 25 years, earning a reputation for his remarkable fidelity to the church and its community. His family has been part of the church for nearly 40 years.

In his ministry, Deacon Zak focused heavily on youth services, including teaching catechism, leading the summer pilgrimage, and organizing trips to the March for Life. His impact on the church’s youth was deeply felt and remains a cherished legacy.

Messages of Condolence

In a statement shared by Rev. John P. Broheimer, pastor of St. Peter’s, the outpouring of sympathy from the community has been overwhelming. “The outpouring of sympathy, prayer, and charity in these past days has been extraordinary,” Rev. Broheimer said.

“So many have written, called, visited, and reached out simply to assure Deacon Zak’s family and this parish of their prayers. That great kindness has been a real consolation in a moment of profound sorrow.”

Contributions to Healthcare

In addition to his ministry, Zak worked as a respiratory therapy supervisor at CHI Health for 38 years. His dedication to patient care and support for his team left a lasting impact on the hospital and its staff. CHI Health issued a statement expressing their heartbreak over the loss.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our colleagues. John Zak devoted his career to caring for patients and supporting his team,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time.”

Deacon John Zak’s legacy is one of service, compassion, and faith, both within the church and the healthcare community. His passing has left a profound void, but the love and support pouring in from his community reflect the deep impact he had on the lives of those around him.
